how does that make you feel?

we really try to help our kids label their feelings and talk through them rather than simply exploding, crying, or slamming doors.  it's hard for kids to find the words to describe such abstract things so we thought we'd help.  instead of just posting a feelings chart (just google it) i put one on magnet paper and cut them up.  our boys have a good time looking at the "silly" faces and imitating the feelings portrayed.  (great practice for expressing feelings and identifying feelings in others) and in more serious moments they will use a magnet they've pulled off the fridge to show us what's going on inside.

once upon a time...

there was this girl i went to college with who was so beautiful and creative, self-confident and witty....well, i was intimidated.  her dorm room was a work of art and her hair was dark and naturally curly.  she was what i wanted to be.  we talked a bit (by the time i got the nerve up my senior year:) but we've really become much closer in the last year due to....yes, blogging!  we both have two little boys (her oldest and my youngest, both "noah") and delight in our husbands and the ability to stay at home.  we are both in the process of losing weight (and posting our actual numbers on her blog for all to see!) and also opening stores on to sell our handmade wares.  she sells the most whimsical, inspiring jewelry.  really.  you should go check it out.  you could wear a burlap bag and still look amazing with one of her pieces.  i have one and always get compliments when i wear it.  go over to her etsy shop (rubywillow) or her blog (linhart live) just to see these unique beauties.  you'll be intimidated at first, but really...she's a very sweet and down-to-earth person.

lovin' lights

as we drove home the other night my 3 year old, noah, asked from the back seat....

noah: can we have those lights again, mommy?
me: christmas lights?
noah: yeah
me: no, honey.
noah: why?
me: we'll have them next year again when we're getting ready to celebrate Jesus' birth and that the light of the world is coming to earth.
noah: but, Jesus is already born-ed so can we just have the lights?

clearing the old to make room for the new!

many of you know i'm slowly building up a business selling handmade and customized items.  the name i'm using is {grateful tulip} because of the power of gratitude in this dutch girl's life.  i have ventured out into a new project that i think will really appeal to a lot of customers, but before i reveal my new stuff, i wanted to "clear out" some of my merchandise.  it's time for a sale!  you can see a sampling of what i have and their clearance price at my {grateful tulip} blog.  go ahead and leave me questions and orders in the comment section on the blog or email gratefultulip at gmail dot com if that's easier.  shipping is only paid on the biggest item you order and additional items ship free.
this sale will run 'til monday ...the day of the big reveal!

want to waste some time?

i don't know if you've ever noticed the blog roll on the left column of this blog, but if you don't have time to get sucked in and completely obsessed with blogland, then DON'T LOOK!
i have the first column reserved for friends' blogs that are fun to catch up on and are of a personal nature.  the second column are more "professional" blogs.  i realize it is difficult to tell sometimes what a blog is about just from the title so i have now added categories for your convenience so you can just get sucked in to the things that interest you.
check it out sometime.  when you have a lot of time.  each blog has its own blog roll and links to other blogs.  it's very much like eating chips.  you will not read just one:)

candy hearts...not just for conveying messages

from Scatterbrained by Ransom Riggs, Will Hickman, and Hank Green

"worth bearing in mind if you're stocking a fallout shelter: NECCO's classic Valentine's Day candy hearts stay edible for about five years. (Which, incidentally, makes them a far better choice than twinkies. Despite what you may have heard, twinkies get rotten and moldy within a couple of months.) If you're like us, you've always thought that all NECCO hearts taste like the exact same variety of sugared chalk, but it turns out that each color (supposedly) has a different flavor."

chalky and no real distinct flavor...i still love them!  enjoy your day!!

more me than you ever asked for

are you on facebook?  if not, you may not have seen these little surveys flying around.  i finally caved and did one myself.  here's 25 things you may or may not have known, but certainly more than you asked for:)

1-I told myself if 10 people tagged me in one of these 25 random thing surveys, I would do it. Thanks a lot, were #10!

2-I was born on New Year’s Day and interrupted my parents New Year’s Eve Party

3-I am 100% dutch and grew up thinking everyone had magnets on their fridge that said “ya aint much if ya aint dutch”

4-I LOVE to blog. Check it out sometime…

5-I went to a private Christian school from preschool through college graduation.

6-I scored almost the same on the SAT in 6th grade as I did in 11th grade. Ouch.

7-As a kid I would read a 100+ page book every few days during the school year and every day in the summer. Even the librarians thought I was a bit weird.

8-My husband and I have lived in 8 different homes in our 8 years of marriage. We are very good at moving if you ever need help.

9-I married my first and only “boyfriend”. We avoided dating for three years telling ourselves it wouldn’t work because I’m a few inches taller than him.

10-I graduated with a double major in biblical studies and education in 2000.

11-My best friend was actually assigned to be my roommate randomly my junior year of college. She coached me through natural childbirth. She’s that good of a friend.

12-My sisters and I grew up with the same initials…”KJK” and we are now “KJV” “KJR” and “KJC”

13-Anne of Green Gables is my favorite movie. EVER. If you don’t watch quietly and with respect, I will not tolerate you watching at all.

14-The thing I feel most passionate about (besides my own family) is foster children. I desperately want to adopt several dozen and love on even more.

15-I delight in making things that I used to think could only be purchased (eg. Taco seasoning, laundry detergent, home d├ęcor pieces, salsa, soap, dishcloths, etc)

16-Dance is the most powerful form of art to me.

17-I love being married. My favorite piece of marriage advice is from my mentor, Tamara….”Divorce is not an option. Murder, yes, but divorce, no.”

18-When I was super young, I picked up a piece of gum that fell out of a big pack (must’ve been around Halloween) at the store, went to the bathroom, chewed it up and spit it out before my mom could see me. I stayed up every night crying about that theft until I “asked Jesus in my heart” when I was 5 1/2 and haven’t felt guilt about it since.

19-I went to an all night scrapbooking event instead of my senior prom

20-Indian food seriously makes me happy. I can’t believe I lived 23 years without it.

21-I am beginning to profoundly enjoy taking things that are to be discarded and creating something beautiful from them.

22- I consume 4-5 (or more) 44 oz diet coke’s per day. Fountain is my favorite.

23- My dad is my hero. There’s too many reasons why to list here.

24-I collect sharpies.

25-I actually like living in Oklahoma. Who would’ve thought?

tea party

when my friend tonya mentioned a tea room here in oklahoma my ears immediately perked up!  i LOVE tea rooms and used to frequent one in gresham, or quite often.  tonya was so sweet to make reservations and even make it a birthday celebration for her aunt, nicolette, and me who all have jan/feb bdays.  we had such fun, not to mention this incredible food....
i will definitely be a return customer at inspirations where i can sip tea, nibble on scones, eat salad so tasty you forget its healthy, and enjoy wonderful company.

what a perfect segway into...

a picture of my son! do you remember when news of these came out years ago? we were all supposed to be cruising around on them by now:) they are really cool and it is so fun that our science museum owns several and lets people try them out!
